King of Spain takes a tour around Martorell

Part of 30th anniversary celebrations for SEAT Ibiza

As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations for the SEAT Ibiza, His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain visited the Martorell plant last week (5 December).

Accompanied by other VIPs including the Catalan government president and the Spanish minister for industry, energy and tourism, the King was shown highlights of SEAT’s design and production powerhouse – Martorell.

The tour began at the SEAT Design Centre where he had a preview of the models planned for launch in the next five years. He then held a meeting in the Technical Centre with SEAT’s senior management and distinguished Catalan business people.

His Majesty then moved on to Assembly Workshop 10 where SEAT’s Leon and Ibiza are built. Here he was shown the workshop’s latest technologies such as ergonomics improvement systems and automatically-guided vehicles for production line supply. The King talked to employees on the assembly line including apprentices from SEAT’s Dual Vocational Training scheme.

Next on the list were two facilities unique to Spain’s automotive sector – the Prototype Development Centre, where future models are created, and the Meisterbock, where model quality during launch and production is tested. King Felipe VI was able to see the process up close as well as the latest technologies used by SEAT to guarantee precision and perfection in all its vehicles.

The visit came to an end at the SPS (SEAT Production System) training centre, where employees are trained in different production skills. Here the King unveiled a plaque commemorating his visit.

Martorell is the highest-production car plant in Spain: 2,100 cars are made here every day (one every 30 seconds), which are then distributed to 76 countries. Production this year has grown by 13 per cent.
