SEAT Alhambra 4WD makes debut at Geneva Motor Show

  • MPV becomes even more versatile with all-wheel drive
  • Impressive dynamics combined with excellent comfort

SEAT has unveiled a new four-wheel drive (4WD) version of the Alhambra at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

It’ll be available with a 140 PS 2.0-litre TDI engine and six-speed manual transmission when it goes on sale in Europe. No decision has been made yet about bringing the 4WD Alhambra to the UK market.

Greater dynamics and traction

The 4WD drive system improves the Alhambra’s traction on every road surface and in every situation for families and leisure and business drivers.

The introduction of permanent all-wheel drive improves the Alhambra’s driving safety and mobility on wintry roads and its performance as a towing vehicle. Its next-generation, electronically controlled all-wheel drive system is set up for optimum driving dynamics.

But the Alhambra’s dynamism doesn’t come at the expense of long-distance comfort; the 4WD system smoothly and quickly adapts the distribution of torque to the current driving situation.

Key to the system is an electronically controlled and hydraulically operated multi-plate clutch which is mounted at the end of the drive shaft in front of the rear axle differential.

Next-generation hi-tech design

Running in an oil bath inside the central clutch is a disc set that can be pressed together in a continuously variable fashion using regulated hydraulic pressure. A control unit constantly analyses the driving conditions; if the car’s front wheels slip, an electrically driven annular piston pump immediately builds up the oil pressure necessary for the clutch to divert a proportion of the driving force to the rear wheels, a process that takes just a few milliseconds.

Powerful performance and excellent economy

It can reach a top speed of 119 mph (191 km/h) and can sprint from rest to 62 mph in only 11.4 seconds. Meanwhile, the frugal TDI engine can achieve 47.1 mpg on a combined cycle (6.0 litres per 100 km) and produces just 158g/km* of CO2.

The Ecomotive package of brake energy recovery and automatic start/stop systems, and the Alhambra’s SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalytic converter, help to make this engine of the world’s cleanest diesel units.

Deliverable as either a five- or six-seater

The Alhambra 4WD will be available in Spain as a five-seater version in Reference and Style trims, with the same standard equipment and hi-tech options as those offered on models with front-wheel drive.

Later this year the Alhambra 4WD will be available with six generous individual seats in a 2+2+2 seating arrangement.
