Audi Q3 production begins in Martorell

by Robin Livingstone on 22 Jun 2011

Production of the new Audi Q3 began at the SEAT Factory in Martorell earlier this month.

Audi plans to deliver around 100,000 new Q3s during its first full year of production. It will be manufactured in three shifts at the Factory in Martorell, and is vital to SEAT reaching its objective of maximising the plant’s production capacity.

“[The Q3] is another example of the trust that the Volkswagen Group, and especially Audi, have placed in SEAT, and of the high level of training and capacity held by all SEAT professionals to manufacture a premium vehicle such as the Q3,”said SEAT’s Vice-President for Production, Wolfram Thomas.

“Manufacturing the Q3 is an example of how we take advantage of synergies within the Group to sharpen our competitive edge,” said Audi AG Vice-President for Production, Frank Dreves. “The Martorell factory is an extremely competent facility with a highly qualified workforce, working together to meet the standards of excellence demanded by our brand. The Q3 most certainly carries the Audi seal of quality.”

Production of the Q3 has created 700 new jobs at the SEAT Factory. Around 1,200 people have undertaken 176 hours of specialist training in preparation for the start of production. Manufacturing the Q3 at Martorell has also enabled SEAT to create and consolidate more than 4,000 jobs in the Spanish motoring industry.

SEAT and Audi have invested nearly €330 million in the facilities and infrastructure necessary to manufacture the Q3. A new 30,000m2 assembly facility has been built and equipped with 450 ultra-modern robots. Technical breakthroughs include the use of a ‘roof dome’, which is used to fit the car’s rook on the chassis, which has previously only been used at Audi’s factory in Ingolstadt, Germany.
